The Kentucky Mansion Celebration
and
Al's Furniture Restoration

During the summer of 2009, in collaboration with Hildabrand Interiors of Bowling Green, Al's Furniture Restoration donated repair and restoration services for The Kentucky Mansion Celebration. A project to revitalize the historic Old Governor's Mansion, participants were asked to volunteer their skills and talents to redecorate and revitalize the nation's oldest official executive residence. Jason Hildabrand of Hildabrand Interiors was selected by Kentucky's First Lady Jane Beshear and sponsor L.V. Harkness & Company to design and furnish the mansion's study. Jason asked me to help with two items to be used in the study. The first item, a 1920's Grosfeld's (pre Grosfeld House) Louis XV desk, received a new leather top with gold tooling and conservatorial veneer repair. The second item, an antique Neoclassical candelabra stand, was repaired and refurbished.
Al was recognized in the September/October edition of Kentucky Homes and Gardens for the donation.

Should an older piece of furniture be refinished or left with its original finish? Would refinishing result in a significant loss of value?

Generally, factory, assembly-line furniture made in the late 19th and 20th centuries can safely be refinished without value being affected. There are times that you do need to have a professional give you an opinion about whether or not to refinish. If a piece predates 1850 and reflects the maker's art, you should seek guidance before refinishing. This is also true of most antique painted furniture. Painted furniture from the 19th century may have value tied up in the painting. This may be true of painted and/or stenciled furniture that really does not look very good at all. Remember, an older piece of furniture may have already had repairs and restoration to the finish. Furniture refinished in the 19th century may well have a nice patina making it difficult to determine if the finish is original. When in doubt, ask the opinion of a professional in the restoration field.

About Al

Since having moved to Bowling Green from my hometown of Williamsburg Ky in 1986, I have been involved in refinishing furniture and dealing in antique furniture. Though I do hold a BS degree in Business and Computer Programming my first love has always been antiques, furniture refinishing, and woodworking. When the PBS series The Woodwright's Shop first aired in 1979 I became an avid fan. My first refinish job was an upright player piano when I was a student in college. Woodworking is in my blood as my great grandfather not only was a cabinet maker but also a sawmill operator, a tintype photograph of my cabinet maker ancestor is one of my most cherished possessions.
